This year Time Magazine chose Pope Francis for their man of the year. What has he done? Driven around in a 1984 Renault instead of the Pope Mobile, he has washed the feet of female prisoners, he kissed the face of a disfigured man. He lives moderately without flaunting the papal wealth, which I guess is admirable but what has he done? He has written an apostolic exhortation, “Evangelii Gaudium” (The Joy of the Gospel), his mission statement for the papacy. His ideas go back to the basics he says, and he preaches tolerance without judgment for gay priests, and condemns capitalism calling for the rich to give to the poor. But what has he done? He promotes change in the Catholic Church, change from the pomp and circumstance to taking the word of God to the streets, getting their hands dirty. Has he read the Bible? There is no forgiveness for homosexuals. There is no forgiveness for women who sin. So what if the Pope forgives you, God won’t. But again, what has the Pope actually done?
If he takes down the crosses in front of Auschwitz maybe, just maybe I will give him a break.
