You and I, we are Los Alamos. Those that never left, those that left and moved back, those that moved away but plan to move back, those that moved away and will never return. We were all born within 30 years of each other. We alone share our own births with the birth of the town itself. We were born of the Atomic Age. We share our births with each other.
We alone share the same father, the man who gave birth to the Atomic Age. The brilliant mind that unlocked the secrets of the universe yet had no understanding of the world he forever changed. The melancholy soul that chose the peaceful solitude of the Jemez Mountains for place to build a weapon of mass destruction. A place he named Los Alamos. The man who created the reason, the place and the opportunity for Americas scientists to change the world. And change the world he did. We that are Los Alamos alone understand this. We share these beginnings with each other.
We together share the understanding that we alone had the knowledge to annihilate each other, to annihilate ourselves. We together share these foundations of our creation. We together share secrets of what we alone knew. Together we are Los Alamos. We share Los Alamos with each other.
Together we solved the mystery of existence. Together we understood the creation of the universe. Together we split the atom. Together we built the worlds first Atomic Bomb. Together we alone had the ability to destroy God’s creation. Together we alone shared the secret of this knowledge.
When J Robert Oppenheimer reflected on what we had done he said this. “Some people laughed, some people cried. Most were silent. I was reminded of the Hindu Scripture from the Bhagavad Gita: Vishnu was trying get the prince to do his duty and to impress him took on his multi armed form and said ‘Now, I am become Death, The Destroyer of Worlds”.
We that are Los Alamos heard in those words heard the hallowed sounds of a broken man. We that are Los Alamos saw eyes that were void of all understanding for the world that broke him. We that are Los Alamos carry the weight of that world we broke.
There are less than 20,000 of us who share our entire history with Los Alamos. The entire history of Los Alamos spans less than 70 years. Los Alamos has forever changed the history of the world. The history of the world has forever changed Los Alamos.
Los Alamos is not just where I am from. Los Alamos is how I know existence beyond ‘God’. Los Alamos is where I am witness to the mass destruction born out of a desire to be more powerful than God. Los Alamos is where I came to understand the doom of man. Los Alamos is how I know who I am.
